Well, it wasn’t so much as post workout nutrition as it was simply a “protein shake” made up of cheap soy protein. We’re going back about 25 years here (some of you older lifters will remember this). In fact, I can remember sitting outside my old gym in the late ‘80’s drinking these pre made drinks that were made from cheap maltodextrin and cheap soy protein. If memory serves me correctly, I think they had about 200 grams of carbohydrates per drink! Wow, I didn’t really think about it at the time but these were some pretty bad ass drinks.
Times have changed and so has post workout nutrition. Post workout drinks are no longer just made with just cheap protein and carbohydrates. Now you have isolates, varying types of carbohydrate release points, creatine, glutamine, joint repair, testosterone boosts, and a bunch of other stuff all mixed into one powder. Just walk into your local GNC or health food store and you’ll see all the different types of post workout drinks and foods. There are some formulations that I really enjoy and think the world of. For example, Mutant’s Rehab is one of my favourites. I’ve come to enjoy the taste and it has all the stuff that I’m looking for in a post workout drink. However, it is a little pricey. At just over $60 for a 1.2 kilogram tub, it works out to about $2.15 per serving for a 30 day supply. It’s worth it if you have the money.
I was in Walmart a couple of weeks ago and I was walking past the baby section and I started thinking about my early bodybuilding days. Now, you may be wondering why the baby section to start thinking about body building? Good question. You see, believe it or not, before the popularity boom of post workout nutrition, there was a time when body builders were slurping down jar after jar of baby food after working out. I think this might have been started by Lee Labrada (world class ‘80’s body builder and owner of Labrada Nutrition) who once mentioned that he eats baby food after working out. After trying it out, I loved it. It was cheap (15 cents for a jar), tasted good, immediately digested, and it didn’t leave you feeling like a bloated pig. The great thing about baby food is that it is specifically engineered to be immediately absorbed which is the most important element to any post workout meal.
However, what I didn’t like about eating baby food was that you had to eat it with a spoon which was kind of hard when you’re riding home on a bike.
Anyways, as I was walking by the baby section I decided to take a peek at the baby food. I spotted these cool little squeeze packs that don’t require a spoon. All you need to do is pop the top and squeeze the pre digested baby food into your mouth. Cool! So I took a look at some of the formulations and it was all “organic” with no fillers or artificial flavors. I took a look at the price and they were going for 90 cents for one pack. Not bad. I decided to try 4 packs:
After my workout I took out banana, peach and apricot pack and popped off the top and simply squeezed the contents into my mouth. No mess, no hassles and it actually tasted great.

As you can see, it contains organic banana, peaches, and apricot purees which have just enough calories and carbohydrates to give me enough of a kick start to get back into the swing of things. As I mentioned earlier, I don’t like feeling bloated after drinking a post workout shake and after having one of these packs, I felt great. I didn’t feel full and it re-energized my body. Do you really want to know why these little packs are great? It’s because they are almost immediately digested by the body. Instant energy from a natural source with no harsh chemicals or added flavors. Also, they're super portable! They can fit into your briefcase, pack sack, pocket, purse...Anywhere.

Plus, I’m kind of bored with having a plain old banana after my workouts!
