How This 51 Year Old Turned His Poor Health Around

The following story comes from one of the readers of Building Muscle 101. It is an inspiring story and one that I'm sure will help you with your own physical journey.

At age 51 I was in the worst shape of my life and something had to happen, my joints hurt all day long, my Cholesterol was at 240, I was lethargic, weighed in at 220 pounds with a body fat of 32% and I’m only 5’6” tall. One morning a thought came into my mind that I could not have predicted, nor did I find it appealing, it was telling me, “Today you are going to start a lifestyle change.”

I thought about this as the day progressed and found myself making small changes, I stopped the soft drinks that day and eliminated all the white flour products that I was so accustomed to consuming. At the end of that day I felt good about myself so I decided to continue on with what I had started and by the end of that first week I had managed to cut 6 pounds from my weight, was I ever surprised and motivated because I was not on a diet, I had only eliminated two simple items that I normally consumed on a daily basis, well that’s when it snowballed on me and I began researching Health and Fitness articles for hours into the night after work each day for weeks.

After a few months went by I was on a road that had me so captivated that I knew I would never go back to what I was, by then I had lost a total of 25 pounds and was building muscle with an exercise program that I had put together for myself with the help of some expert bodybuilders that I had met on line, the pain in my joints had diminished, my Cholesterol was dropping along with the body fat and my energy was higher than it had been in years, I was hooked and began to set new and higher goals.

Today I am 54 years old and I have the body and health that I had when I was in my twenties, I do not diet, I eat only whole grains, fruits, vegetables, fish and poultry. I continue to reach all of the goals I’ve set for myself, my Cholesterol is now at 129, my body fat is currently at 13% and I weigh 160 pounds, which is a total loss of 60 pounds since beginning. My new goal is to get below 10% body fat and add an additional mass of muscle, all of which I will accomplish before this summer.

The true message I want to share is that you are never too old if you really want to change your lifestyle and regain some of your youth, the power to change is lying deep inside one self just waiting to be unleashed. I went back to school at age 53 and earned my Diploma as a Fitness Trainer/Nutrition Specialist and will continue increasing my own knowledge as well as share what I have learned with all others who want that lifestyle.

With childhood obesity being such an epidemic today it’s up to us adults to set the example for our younger generation, so by improving our own health were also giving them someone to look up to.
