When Is The Best Time To Do Cardio?
"Is It In The Morning, Before A Workout Or After?"
If your goal is to burn the maximum amount of fat than your going to have to do cardio. We all know that cardio is one of the best ways to help you burn off those unwanted pounds of fat. However, what a lot of people don’t know is that there are optimal times to do cardio for the absolute best results.
The thing you have to remember is that you want to be burning fat calories when you do your aerobic (cardio) exercise.
You see, the body has two sources of energy; sugar and fat.
Sugar or glycogen is stored in the liver and muscle and is the easiest from of energy for your body to use. Glycogen is the bodies preferred source of energy. Fat on the other hand, requires more work to be used as energy.
Why? The problem is that fat can be broken down only as long as oxygen is available. Oxygen must be present for your body to burn fat for energy, but not to burn glycogen. In the initial stages of exercise, oxygen is not yet available.
It can take anywhere from 20 to 35 minutes of constant exercise before fat is fully available to the muscles as fuel. Depending on your current conditioning will determine how efficiently your body burns fat.
So, it would make sense to do your aerobic (cardio) exercises when you have little or nothing in your stomach. Eating or drinking anything before you do your cardio sessions will raise blood sugar levels which can actually hinder the fat burning process. If your body has plenty of glucose to draw from, it will actually use this first as an energy source. Once your glucose levels are used up, it will than use up fat for an energy source.
When is the best time to do cardio in order to burn fat? In the morning when you have nothing in your stomach. This way, any glucose you have in your system will be at a minimum and will be used up fairly quickly. You can than use more fat as energy than glucose.
Now, if you can’t do your cardio in the morning, I strongly suggest you do your main cardio after you’ve finished your main workout. I don’t know why people do 25 minutes of cardio before their workouts.
Firstly, doing 25 minutes of cardio before your workout drains you of all energy. You basically have no fuel in the tank in order to effectively get the most from your weight training. You need a lot of glucose in your system in order to lift the maximum amounts of poundages. If you have no glucose in your system, your not going to have a very effective weight training workout.
Secondly, by doing your cardio after your weight training workout, you ensure that you are using more fat for energy than glucose. Since most of your glucose was used up in your weight training sessions, your body will have no choice but to use more fat for energy than glucose.
So there you have it. The best time to do your cardio is first thing in the morning when you have nothing in your stomach. If you can’t do your cardio in the morning, make sure you do it after your main weight training sessions.
