A Complete Review Of The Smooth CE 2.1 Elliptical Trainer![]() The Smooth CE 2.1 is a relatively new addition to the Smooth line of elliptical trainers. I believe Smooth now offers 3 other elliptical models on top of the popular Smooth CE. Again, Smooth is a pretty solid company that is a factory direct dealer. The Smooth CE 2.1 elliptical trainer comes with all the bells and whistles you’ve come to expect from Smooth and the trainer is quite sturdy and durable. Overall, a nice looking elliptical trainer that’s built to last. Size The smooth ce 2.1 elliptical trainer is a middle weight elliptical trainer that weights about 175 pounds. It’s not as light as some of the eclipse or proform models but than again, this model is made of heavier materials for longer lasting life. The smooth 2.1 elliptical trainer comes with wheels on the back of the trainer so if you want to move it around, you can pick up the front end and wheel to wherever you want to go. However, I would say the smooth 2.1 is more of a stationary elliptical since you don’t want to be dragging around 175 pounds in your home. Adjustable resistance/peddles Electronic eddy current magnetic variable resistance The smooth ce 2.1 elliptical trainer is offering more than enough challenging programs through it’s resistance levels. I think a peddle adjustment would have been perfect for this model but it was left out. I think peddle adjustments are perfect if you have more than 1 user in your family. This way, everyone in your family can enjoy the benefits of the elliptical trainer. You see, if an elliptical trainer has a small elliptical stride (16" and under), tall individuals will have a harder time benefiting from the exercise. The elliptical stride is simply too small for someone 6'2" than for someone who is 5'7". Adjustable peddles can help offset this difference by adjusting to individual needs. As with the Smooth 7.4, this model also offers ergonomic pivoting pedals. This feature allows your foot to move with the pedal sort of like a bicycle pedal does. See image below. ![]() The flywheel on the smooth ce 2.1 is about 20 pounds which is pretty standard for elliptical trainers. It is a heavy duty flywheel made for heavy use and if you combine that with it’s super quiet magnetic resistance, you get a pretty smooth ride. Remember, a larger flywheel usually offers a better ride because it can handle more intensity. Elliptical stride 16" Diameter stride This is the one thing that I don’t like about the smooth ce 2.1 elliptical trainer. The 16" elliptical stride may be too small for someone over 6 feet tall. The frame is built for heavy duty use and it can support up to 300 pounds, and yet, the elliptical stride limits the benefit to individuals under 6 feet tall. I’m not saying a person over 6' tall can’t use an elliptical trainer with a 16" elliptical stride because they can. However, they won’t get the same benefit from the exercise as compared to someone under 6 feet tall. You see, a lot of the benefit from the exercise comes from the fact that the larger range of motion makes for a better exercising experience. It doesn’t matter if you are lifting weights or using an elliptical trainer, a full range of motion will always be more benefit to the user. Anything lower than a 16 inch elliptical stride, the taller individual may not be able to effectively use an elliptical trainer for it’s full benefit. Display/control panel LCD screen with course profile The LCD screen is pretty standard. Of course, as you can see from the comparison below that the dot matrix on the smooth ce 3.1 has a better layout. You will find most gym elliptical models will have a dot matrix display since it acts as a better exercise indicator. LCD readout: ![]() Dot matrix readout: ![]() As you can see, there is a difference but not a big one. An impressive lineup of readouts. The smooth ce 2.1 elliptical trainer doesn’t come with a wireless heart strap but really, all you have to do is put your hands on the pulse grip and presto, you have your heart rate. Although, a wireless chest strap is desirable if you are concentrating on heart rate controlled programs (which is included). However, all you have to do is grab the pulse grips and off you go. Programs 9 programs Target Time Whew! There are some pretty good programs here. I’m very impress with all of these programs. Smooth provides you with more than enough programs to get you going and to keep you going until you’ve reached your goals. Frame Sturdy and durably constructed At 175 pounds, the smooth ce 2.1 elliptical trainer is built to last. Although not the heaviest elliptical trainer that Smooth has, it is heavy enough to support up to 300 pounds. Heart rate monitor Yes The unit does not come with a wireless heart rate attachment. However, it does come with a hand grip heart rate control. Simply put your hands on the hand grip, give it a couple of seconds and than check your console out. You will have your heart rate posted on the LCD screen and can be used in conjunction with the heart rate control programs. Dual action handle bars Yes The smooth ce 2.1 elliptical does have independent arms for a total body workout. Warranty and service Frame: Life time There are a few things that can improve but overall, a solid warranty package. If you are interested in the Smooth CE 2.1 or any other Smooth products, I strongly suggest you get the “turnkey” assistance. The shipper will unload, place, and setup your treadmill anywhere in your home or office and remove packing materials. I believe the cost is around $95.00 but well worth it since self assembly can be a hassle and if you don’t know what your doing, you might just construct your elliptical backwards. The sales page for the smooth ce 2.1 says minimal assembly but, after looking at the user’s manual, I felt dizzy and confused. Unless you are very confident in your construction abilities, go with the turnkey service. Now, there is one thing that I must mention about the customer service here. I sent an email to Smooth regarding some technical specs about the smooth models and the email was replied to almost instantly. It was both courteous and well informed. I did this three times and every time, the response was within one hour - one was even out of business hours, all with the respect and courtesy of a valued customer. Very impressive. I sent an email to proform 4 days ago and I’m still waiting for a reply. Price/cost effectiveness $1,299 U.S For $1,299, you won’t find a better elliptical trainer in this price range. The smooth ce 2.1 elliptical trainer is well made, the company stands behind their product via the warranty package, and has all the necessary features that you would find on high end elliptical models. You, as a consumer are getting top end construction with enough electronic goodies to keep you going from beginner to advanced. Of course, there are some additional items that are not on this model when compared to the smooth ce 3.1 or 7.4, but if you are looking to spend around $1,200 for a quality elliptical, than this is your model. Special features - Pivotal peddles; Elliptical Rating I think the smooth ce 2.1 is excellent value for your money. You get top grade materials and high end construction. When it comes to elliptical trainers, you always get what you pay for. For $1,200 you get a well made elliptical with high end functions. All the best,
