Compared to the Smooth CE, the schwinn 418 elliptical is slightly larger. At 172 pounds, the schwinn 418 elliptical trainer is quite steady and sturdy. I wouldn't call the 418 trainer a compact trainer like some of the smaller models from Proform or Fitness Quest but than again, these elliptical models are built for more durability.
I highly recommend you take a look at Kyle Leon's program called "Somanabolic Muscle Maximizer" The reason why I'm recommending this program is because it is the only one I know of that uses a proprietary software to customize a complete muscle building and fat burning nutrition program for you. The system uses:
To produce a 9 week muscle building course that includes a weight training program and custom nutrition system. Check it out here.
I've actually purchased and used the program myself. You can read my review of this program at:
Suffice to say, the schwinn 418 elliptical trainer is more of a stationary elliptical machine and chances are, you will not be transporting this elliptical from room to room.
However, the schwinn 418 elliptical trainer does come with transport wheels, so in case you want to move it from room to room, you can do it.
Is a big elliptial machine a bad thing? No, not at all.
Generally, well built elliptical machines are going to weight more since the materials used in the construction process are more durable. That is, these materials are used on elliptical trainers so that they will last longer than one year of steady use.
Take the Precor models for example, some of these models can weight as much as 300 plus pounds but, they are built to last for life and the warranty from precor says as much. The Precor warranty is lifetime frame and welds, 10 years parts and wear items and 1 year labour. You wont find this kind of warranty anywhere else so you know, these heavy weight elliptical machines are built to last.
Compared to the schwinn warranty which is 15 years frame, 2 years parts, 1 year electronics, labour 6 months, and wear items 6 months its not really comparable but more so than with cheaper models - Except for the 6 month wear items.
Take comfort in knowing that this middle weight elliptical machine is a good sized trainer built to last and the company stands behind the schwinn 418 elliptical trainer with lifetime frame.
The schwinn 418 elliptical trainer uses the eddy current brake system which is possibly the quietest and smoothest resistance system on the elliptical market today.
Also, the schwinn 418 elliptical trainer uses an over sized fly wheel at the front of the elliptical for an even smoother ride. I find the larger fly wheels offers a more comfortable ride.
According to the Schwinn this is called a high inertia drive system. What does that mean? Basically, the larger the fly wheel, the smoother the ride becomes after reaching higher levels of exercise.
Take a 12 speed bicycle for example. As you peddle your 12 speed, you will notice as you go faster, that the first gear is simply too unstable to produce effective results. You need to switch to a higher gear such as the 5th or even 10th gear to effectively match the speed of your leg movement to the speed of your wheels.
The first gear on your 12 speed is smaller in diameter compared to the 12 gear which is considerably larger. You will also notice that the higher gears produce smoother results. This is the thinking behind the schwinn 418 elliptical trainer's "high inertia system".
The schwinn 418 elliptical trainer also uses an articulating footplate for added comfort. What does this mean? Basically, it means the footplate adjusts according to the motion of movement to provide ankle relief and support. You will notice on fixed foot plates, your foot is in a fixed position and your ankles suffer to some extent because of over stretching. With adjustable foot plates, the motion is more natural and offers more support and comfort to the ankle region. All in all, a more natural movement.
The peddles are also oversized to accommodate all users.
The elliptical stride is more than enough to accommodate most of the users in your home. That is, if you have one person who is 5'9' and another who is 6'2', both can use the schwinn 418 elliptical trainer to maximum benefit. Anything lower than a 16 inch elliptical stride, the taller individual will not be able to effectively use an elliptical trainer.
Calories per hour
Grip heart-rate monitoring
Power supply- 4 C cell batteries or AC adapter
The schwinn 418 elliptical trainer has a lot of electronic goodies for you to look at while you are exercising. You can monitor all aspects of your training.
You can either plug into your nearest wall socket or you can use 4 C cell batteries for your electronics.
The schwinn 418 elliptical trainers 12 programmes include rolling, valley, fat burn, ramp, random, plateau, intervals, mountain, 2 heart-rate, 1 fitness test, & manual mode. As you can see, there is a wide variety of programmes to choose from so you will not go bored with these programmes.
The schwinn 418 elliptical trainer is a solid elliptical trainer. As stated earlier in the review, the total weight of the schwinn 418 elliptical trainer is 172 pounds with a larger fly wheel base. What does this mean? It means that as you really get going on this machine, it wont wobble or squeak. That is, since the fly wheel is large enough to sustain high levels of activity, it wont offset the weight of the elliptical trainer since its heavy enough so that it wont wobble around. If the same fly wheel was on an elliptical machine that was under 100 pounds, than you would have a lot of unstable action.
There is no heart monitor but there are pulse grips on the handle bars. To get your heart rate, simply put your hands on the grips.
The schwinn 418 elliptical trainer comes with dual action handle bars so have the option of having a total body workout.
The schwinn 418 elliptical trainer has an ok warranty package. You know a company stands behind their product when they offer 15 years plus on the frame on the elliptical machine. However, there are flaws. Notice that wear items are only for 6 months. That is, parts that are most likely to break during initial use are not covered.
And, of course, the consumer must pay for all shipping charges if you are not satisfied with the product. According to the Schwinn warranty page:
*Beware. According to the manufacture:
Nautilus®, Schwinn® Fitness, and StairMaster®
Customers have 30 days from the day they receive their machine to either exchange or return products. Customers must call our customer service sales support line at (800) 436-9892 to initiate pick-up service of the machine.
If the machine is sent back for any reason other than a manufacturing defect, the customer will be responsible for the shipping charges to and from our factory and a disassembly charge. Before the machine is returned, an authorized representative must first diagnose the machine and determine that a return is necessary.
This diagnosis will generally occur within 3-10 business days after initial contact. Refunds do not include shipping and handling fees.
Its too bad a manufacturer cant pick up the shipping tab for their own defective equipment. Not only do you have to pay for the shipping, you have to pay a disassembly charge if the elliptical trainer is not up to par. Well, compared to other warranty standards that I have seen on other elliptical trainers, the schwinn warranty is ok.
Delivery is only available within the 48 contiguous United States. Delivery is not available to P.O. boxes, APO/FPO addresses, or international destinations. You will have to call you local schwinn dealer for delivery outside the U.S.
The schwinn 418 elliptical trainer is one of the more popular elliptical trainers on the market today. Personally, I think the schwinn 418 elliptical trainer is one of the top elliptical machines in its price range. If youre looking at price range of $1,000 to $1,200 for an elliptical trainer, you may want to check out the schwinn 418 elliptical trainer.
Some of the special feature that I like about the schwinn 418 elliptical trainer is the fact that they use the eddy current breaking system, adjustable footplate, large fly wheel, and its heavy duty construction. These key components make for a quality elliptical trainer.
Overall, the schwinn 418 elliptical trainer is a solid elliptical trainer that will last. Its built using top line parts and the construction process is a high grade. For those of you who want an almost commercial grade elliptical machine for $1,000, you might want to check out the schwinn 418 elliptical trainer.
