Muscle Tech is a trademarked name who's parent company is called Iovate Health Sciences Inc. Iovate has a huge presence in the research development and marketing of sports nutritional supplements.
Muscle Tech has been around for about 12 years and are probably one of the largest supplement companies today.
They first invaded the supplement scene back in 1995 with their famous muscle stack which was Meso Tech, Creatine 6000 ES, and Hydroxycut.
It was this trio of products that officially launched the Muscle Tech machine and paved the way for their supplement dominancy for the next 6 years.
With the introduction of their second generation products such as their flagship supplements, Cell Tech, Nitro Tech, and Hydroxycut, it seemed as though, Muscle Tech were unstoppable.
However, it seemed that, up until 4 years ago, Muscle Tech was starting to dry up because other companies were starting to come up with cutting edge supplement technologies such as better absorbing creatines and other vasodilators such as AAKG (L-arginine). With the introduction of these new supplements, a part of Muscle Tech's target market were switching to other brand names that were manufacturing these next generation supplement products.
What was Muscle Tech's response? Well, they came up with some pretty cutting edge products of their own, such as Gakic, Leukic, and Anator p-70. With the introduction of these products, Muscle Tech unleashed a barrage of marketing blitz' that included a line up of all star pro body builders. There's not a single fitness or body building magazine today that doesn't have pages upon pages of marketing information and Team Muscle Tech photos with these products from Muscle Tech.
Muscle Tech timed their new second arrival perfectly. The thing you have to remember about Muscle Tech is that their main area of expertise is not their supplements. The Muscle Tech company is a marketing monster and they are the masters of that realm. Today, there is know other supplement company comes close to the marketing mechanisms of the Muscle Tech machine.
The marketing team over at Muscle Tech know their market inside and out and they know exactly how to push our muscle buttons to get the response they are looking for. Although they spend quite a bit of money on manufacturing their supplements, I would gather that they spend a huge amount of their budget on marketing.
They are now back on top and it doesn't seem like their going anywhere.
Personally, I've used Muscle Tech products and I've generally had some half decent results with their supplements. Lately, I've been trying their new product called Anator P-70.
Anator P-70 is described, by Muscle Tech as the worlds first and only muscle gene activator. Here's a description from the front label of Anator P-70:
Genetically triggers rapid and dramatic muscle growth;
Scientifically engineered to immediately manipulate master genetic muscle regulators P70 S6K, MAFbx, FOXO, PKB, and mTOR;
The most powerful DNA-activating muscle size and strength product ever developed;
These statements sound amazing! I mean, who wouldn't want something that genetically triggers rapid and dramatic muscle growth! This is every aspiring strength athletes dream. However, as I said before, Muscle Tech is a marketing think tank and they know exactly how to push our buttons.
When I first purchased my first tub of Anator P-70, I couldn't help but chuckle to myself when I was taking a look at the illustration they have on the back. Take a look at it below:
What the heck is a PHAS-1? What's this FOXO and MAFBX stuff? Unless you really know your stuff when if comes to bio chemistry, who would be able to understand all this mumbo jumbo? Another Muscle Tech smoke and mirrors marketing tactic.
Heres a statement from Muscle Techs website about Anator P-70:
Anator-p70 is devastatingly powerful and is designed to turn on your DNA for muscle growth, allowing you to maximize your genetic potential in order for you to increase muscle mass and size to the fullest extent of your natural ability. Anator-p70is engineered to activate the key signaling cascades consisting of mTOR, PKB, and p70S6K, which ultimately lead to faster muscle growth you just can't get with any other bodybuilding supplement. With Anator-p70, you can now maximally activate your genetics for massive muscle growth!
Well, our DNA is always turned on for growth whether Anator P-70 is there or not. If it wasnt, wed all be dead. From what you read here, it sounds as if the only compound that will turn on our cellular signalling agents is Anator P-70. All protein and carbs that we ingest from our daily diet turn on our cell signalling agents regardless of what Muscle Tech says.
However, from what you read in that statement, it sounds too good to be true. A supplement that can actually activate special protein enzymes that cause a response in the cells to grow. Can Anator P-70 actually do this? Lets take a closer look.
What Is Anator P-70 Supposed To Do?
Basically, Anator P-70 is supposed to activate the growth mechanisms via protein enzymes within the muscle cells themselves. It does this by sending signals to the cells using certain stimuli such as amino acids (particularly Leucine), insulin, and other growth factors such as IGF-1. These stimuli activate the translators which sends signals through the cell walls and within the cell in order to start the growth process.
So, you have a nutrient such as leucine that activates the receptor agent at the surface of the cell which transports a signal to the nucleus of the cell to start the growth process. From Muscle Tech literature you have: mTOR, PKB and P-70 S6K. These protein enzymes are actually in the body and they do in fact signal the cell for growth. So you have an outside stimuli that activates the signalling agents that carry the growth message to the cell in order for it to do its thing, which is to grow.
Folks, this is the simple growth process and happens day in and day out for everyone on this planet. Nothing fancy here because all this stuff happens whether or not Anator P-70 is present. Cell growth happens in one of two directions. It can grow or it may not grow. Thats it. If there is enough nutrients at the right times, muscle growth will happen. If there are no nutrients, the cell will not grow.
Whats In Anator P-70
The active ingredients in Anator P-70 are the amino acid leucine and dextrose.
Each serving comes with the following:
Leucine 7.2 grams (amino acid);
Phenylalanine 7.2 grams (amino acid);
Carbohydrates (simple and complex in the form of dextrose and maltodextrin) 57 grams;
Creatine, alanine and alpha ketogluterate 5 grams
I believe the primary active ingredients are leucine and carbohydrates. Im not sure why phenylalanine was included.
Leucine is a very important amino acid. Since its an essential amino acid, it must be ingested from sources outside the body. That is, we cannot produce this amino acid within our bodies so we have to get it from other dietary needs. Leucine plays an important role in that it helps promote muscle growth and repair. It also helps:
Regulate blood sugar levels;
Helps provide the body with energy;
Helps increase the production of growth hormones;
Helps burn body fat;
Helps to promote muscle recovery after exercise and helps prevents muscle breakdown.
So, you can see the leucine is very important for muscle growth and repair.
By using a fast acting carbohydrate such as dextrose, the supplement can cause a surge of insulin in the body.
Insulin is the bodies transport mechanism which helps facilitates nutrient transportation of a number of nutrients such as glucose (carbs - fuel), and protein (building material), within the muscle cells. This, is where the growth happens. By using a nutrient signalling agent such as dextrose, it can cause a surge of insulin in the body that will help transport glucose and shuttle protein, or leucine (in this case with Anator P-70) into the muscle cell in order to trigger muscle growth.
Quite amazing actually.
Anator P-70 also includes creatine which Im not sure how much is included. However, if you were to take a look at most Muscle Tech products, you will see some sort of creatine addition within the formula. Im guessing this is a back up ingredient. We all know creatine works so why not add it to the formula....Just to make sure...
Anyways, Im no chemist and this is a very simplified version of the cell / growth reaction to outside stimuli. However, from the research I did on Anator P-70, this is what I can surmise from the literature I looked at.
How Did Anator P-70 Work For Me?
Ive been using Anator P-70 for about 3 months now and I can say that it hasnt blasted me past my genetic potential. However, what I can say is that the stuff works. The main reason why I forked out my $75 bucks for a 30 day supply was to see if it worked. And yes, it does.
Did the Anator P-70 genetically trigger rapid and dramatic muscle growth? No, it didnt. It helped and it did work, but nothing close to reaching my genetic potential. But I cant complain because the only reason I buy something is to see if it will help me accomplish something that I want. In this case, I wanted a nutritional supplement to aid me with my training. Anator P-70 seemed to fit the bill.
Now, when I try a new supplement, I give it at least 8 weeks with my training and diet in place. I will also keep to my regular schedule of tried and true supplements that I know work. I will add one new supplement to my schedule, this way I can keep everything the same and I know if something new works.
With my tried and tested supplements, I know where I should be at specific stages of my training and diet within a certain training cycle. Now, once I add a new supplement to my cycle, I will generally know if it works after the first 3 to 4 weeks. Once I start to feel some positive effects, I will know that it will be from the new supplement.
With the Anator P-70, I started to feel the positive effects after 2 weeks of use.
I used Anator P-70 according to their directions. I took one serving immediately after training and only on training days. The stuff tastes terrible but after a couple of days, you get used to the taste.
To be very honest with you, as much as I hate the Muscle Tech marketing mechanisms, most of their products work. Otherwise, they wouldnt have been in business this long.
If you take a look at the literature from Muscle Tech about Anator P70, there is a lot of mumbo jumbo about mTOR, P-70 S6K, PKB, and a bunch of other stuff that the average weight trainer has absolutely no clue what they mean.
I think its a good thing that Muscle Tech adds these terms in order to explain how this stuff works but in reality, they do the exact opposite. They intentionally make it more complicated in order to make it sound technical. If it sounds like its straight from a bio-chemistry book, it must work, right? I really dont like this type of marketing because it adds to the mass confusion regarding supplements.
Yes, Anator P-70 works.
However, once you get past all the technical, marketing mumbo jumbo, you can actually see what the stuff really is. Its nothing more than protein, carbs, and creatine.
We all know that protein and carbs are needed immediately after exercise. Its been clinically proven that ingesting fast acting protein and carbohydrates after training are beneficial to strength training and building muscle. Creatine has also been clinically proven to add more strength.
Really, Anator P-70 is nothing more than 57 grams of fast acting carbs, 20 grams of protein, and 3 to 5 grams of good ole creatine. There is nothing new in this formula.
You would never know it by looking at the marketing information from Muscle Tech. It just wouldnt be in Muscle Techs best interest to state this fact.
Now, will I keep on using Anator P-70? No, I wont be. Let me tell you why.
My biggest concern with nutritional supplements is that I need something that is more geared to my body size, build and metabolism. With Anator P-70, you get 57 grams of carbs, 20 grams of protein and 3 to 5 grams of protein. This is simply not enough for what Im looking for. What I need in a post workout supplement is:
40 to 50 grams protein (preferably BCAAs 2:1 Leucine combo);
50 grams fast acting carbs (dextrose);
50 grams medium acting carbs (maltodextrin);
5 to 10 grams creating ethyl ester or tricreatine malate;
10 grams glutamine;
200 mg alpha lipoic acid;
2 gram of glycocyamine
This is my basic, personal formula that Im looking for. Unfortunately, no company in theyre right mind will come up with this kind of formula because its just too expensive for them to manufacture. For this kind of formula, supplement companies will have to charge over $100 for a 30 day supply. Believe me, this formula is a true mass monster that will outperform any supplement you have on your shelf but for most of us, it will never be developed for cost reasons.
But that was before...
I forked over $27 for an ebook called Home Made Supplement Secrets by Jeff Anderson. Afer reading this ebook a couple of times, I now realize how easy it is to customize all my supplement needs for 1/3 of the price for retail supplements.
The ebook is a true eye opener and it will shed A LOT of light on your current supplement regime. The book will show you how to reproduce the same formulas you see in the magazines at 1/3 of the price. For example, did you know you can reproduce the same formula as Gakic for 1/3 of the price. At retail, Gakic goes for about $65 for a 30 day supply. For just under $10, you can get the same ingredients for a 30 day supply. In about 10 minutes, you can effectively produce a 30 day supply with the list of ingredients supplied and where to purchase them.
Or how about Leukic? This product is one of Muscle Techs flagship products. At retail, this product goes for about $65 retail for a 30 day supply. Mr. Anderson shows you how to reproduce this formula and where to order the ingredients for under $7 per month.
Jeff Anderson breaks the supplements down into 8 categories as follows:
Energy/Pre Workout Aids;
Post Workout Recovery;
Nitric Oxide Enhancers;
In each category, Jeff takes the top 3 best sellers and takes a good hard look at each of the primary and ancillary ingredients. Each ingredient is analysed for effectiveness.
Here are just some of the other supplements you can produce at a 1/3 of the retail price.
Muscle Milk by Cytosport;
Hydroxycut by MuscleTech;
Cell Mass by BSN;
Cell Tech Hardcore by MuscleTech;
Aplodan by MuscleTech;
Lipo 6 by Nutex;
Redline by VPX;
Leukic by MuscleTech;
Catapult by EAS;
No Xplode by BSN
And a bunch more.
I think the most important thing here to remember is that you can have total control over the ingredients and the amounts. It is in the best interest of supplement companies to keep costs to a minimum so they wont be adding anymore than they have to and this is bad for the consumer. By customizing your supplements, you can have complete control over the amount of active ingredients you need for you size and metabolism.
If Muscle Tech were to add at least 40 grams of protein, another 30 to 40 grams of carbs, 10 grams of glutamine and another 5 grams of creatine ethyl ester to their Anator P-70 formula, this would fit my personal bill perfectly. However, they wont do this because it simply costs too much for them to manufacture and their profit margins will suffer.
For a supplement company to manufacture the above noted formula ,it would cost the consumer over a $100 for a 30 day supply. I can produce a 3 month supply for under $40 per month.
